Dianetics and the Grade Chart

A DISCUSSION OF CASPAR DE RIJK'S ANALYSIS

In his article Caspar analyses the proper position of Dianetics on the Grade Chart.

For this purpose, he quotes several Bulletins where LRH speaks about the subject. All of these have to do with the case in point - but in actual fact, none of the quotes state that Dianetics comes before Scientology. They just assert that Dianetics and Scientology are two seperate subjects, that Dianetics addresses the body and Scientology the thetan, and that somebody who has a lot of body troubles will not be able to advance spritually - which is further stressed by the fact that LRH counts this case condition as one amongst the seven resisitive cases.

From this we can conlude: Yes, Caspar is right - to put Dianetics after the Grades, as the Church did in 1981 with the HCOB "Theory of the New Grade Chart" is an arbitrary not at all supported by any earlier tech, and in cases where the PC has a lot of attention on somatics etc. it will not work.

But on the other hand it is not compelling to handle Dianetics first if this case condition is not present. None of the references says so. In fact there is a HCO PL of 17 Nov 1969, "Dianetics and Scientology Services", which can be found in the OEC Volumes 2 and 4, which states the contrary. It is not written by LRH but by the then CS-1 Brian Livingston - however, there is little doubt that it in fact was written based on notes by LRH, as it says in the end of the PL (other than in modern times where this statement is constantly made to justify alterations of LRH materials after his death), and reflects what at that time was held to be standard tech.

The PL states (stresses by capital letters as in original text):

"Dianetics is not a prerequisite for pcs to be audited on Scientology grades. ON the contrary. PCs CAN BE STARTED ON SCIENTOLOGY GRADES.
...
It is TRUE that pcs who need medical treatment should get it and then be audited on Dianetics. It is TRUE Dianetics handles aches and pains, accidents and illness and is a vital auditing tool. BUT IT IS ALSO TRUE THAT A LARGE PERCENTAGE OF PCs CAN GO STRAIGHT TO SCIENTOLOGY GRADES.
...
Many pcs find Dianetics auditing too steep a gradient and start better on level zero. When they are Grade IV they run fine on Dianetics and Dianetics Triples.
...
A sick pc is channeled by the registrar and Tech Sec into Dianetics. A fairly healthy pc is channeled by the registrar and Tech Sec direct into Scientology grades.
...
The intention of the whole Dianetic programme was to reach out, putting a type of training in the field and to handle cases of psychosomatic illness."

The Policy Letter also warns to drop out either side, Dianetics or Scientology, and cautions the orgs to deliver both.

This goes along with what Captain Bill Robertson wrote in his Tech Briefing No. 12 where he says,

"Then from that point he can be evaluated to whether he can be run on the Dianetics side or the Scientology side of the bridge first.
...
Does he have somatics and body problems that is taking up most of his attention, and most of the reads on the White Form are on that? Or, is he more interested in his theta abilities and his ability to communicate and handle other people and so on like that?
...
Whatever is giving him the most problems there, you can sort of put him on to that side of the bridge. At this point you can aim a Life Repair to gently knock off any things that may be concerning him in life, so he can have his ruds put in very easily and that he F/Ns easily. That is after the resistive points handling.
So he is evaluated – does he go on the Scientology or Dianetics side of the bridge first? Does he need more of his body handled first so he can have more attention units available? Or, does he need the grades and ARC Straight Wire? In either case - ARC Straight Wire has to be done, because that is the basic process that enables a thetan to understand the ability of recalling. He needs 'recalling ability' all the way up the bridge. Of course, he also needs – in Dianetics – he needs to go through it, but you first start him off with the recall ability. So either way he goes, he must have ARC Straight Wire, and that would possibly come after a little Life Repair."

Given the two factors that a pc might not be able to run Dianetics at the beginning of his auditing, and that a pc might not have a lot of attention on somatics, misemotions etc., there are many cases for whom it is best to do grades first and then Dianetics.

However it should be kept in mind that the big boom of the early 1970 very probably was owed to the advent of the HSDC. It was not only relatively easy to train auditors on it, it was also something to audit which for many people, both auditors and pcs, was very real - a direct stab at the reactive mind. So one shouldn't discard this aspect of the matter. But from a purely C/Sing point of view there is no fixed answer to the question "shall I put the pc on Dianetics before or after the grades" - the C/S has discretion here and should use his judgment in accordance with LRH basics.
