The Historical Development of Dianetics and Scientology

This table was written down during my study of the SHSBC. Maybe I left out this or that important roadstop, given the fact that especially the early materials are sometimes not available or difficult to get at. If you find that something is wrong or some important point is missing I would be glad to receive your suggestions.

May 1950 ("Dianetics, The Modern Science of Mental Health")
Processing: Running of Engrams and Secondaries, Technique: Mostly Repeater Technique. The phenomenon of chains is already known, but is not emphasized.
Goal of processing: Clear
The "I" = Basic personality is mentioned, but regarded as "weak". The analytical mind is what controls a person.
Past lifes are not mentioned.
Only things that have been done to a person are aberrative (not things they have done to another).
Valences are adopted out of engrams as winning valence or, where not possible, as succumbing ones.
Broken dramatizations bring about chronic diseases; Engrams of sympathy are mentioned (Forerunner of service facsimiles)
August 1951 ("Science of Survival") The techniques have become differentiated, with different recommendations depending on the tone level of the preclear. Running of engrams, running of secondaries, lock scanning, Straight memory.
The different techniques and approaches have been brought into a complete system.
Past lifes are represented as something probable.
November 1951 ("Advances Procedures and Axioms")
Emphasis on effort and emotion.
Most important goal of processing: To run the service facsimile of the pc, which can be found with the help of the "emotional curve" and which is responsible for psychosomatic illnesses.
Aberration is based on self-determinism.
December 1951 ("Handbook for Preclears“) Emphasis in processing: Effort, emotion, service facsimile. Valences are adopted because of failed help, especially if the other person is dead ("Life continuum").
The Thetan appears under the designations "I" and "Control centre". The concept of "I" is the control centre.
Past lifes are regarded as a fact. Differentiation between the line of the GE and the theta line.
Clear as a goal is no longer mentioned. Instead of it: "Fifteen" = case completion (after having completed the fifteenth act).
Occlusions are handled by running counter emotion in the occluded area.
Early 1952
The term "Overt" appears in lectures.
According to PAB 35 exteriorization is announced publicly for the first time.
3 Mar 1952 ("Scientology, Milestone One", HCL-2) The term "Scientology" is re-introduced (used first 1947 in the book title "Scientology – A new Science" which was the original title of "Dianetics – Evolution of a Science").
Instead of running out of all engrams as given in Book 1, the goal is now to make the person so capable that he can handle any facsimile.
Entities are mentioned as subordinate personalities but are still identified with implanted demon circuits.
Implants are mentioned.
July 1952 ("History of Man") Strong emphasis on "electronic incidents" (implants).
Running overts is regarded as important. The earlier so called recession of incidents is now explained with the fact that there must be an overt incident connected with it which has to be run.
The term "mock-up" appears. Creative processing is recommended as a senior technique ("Technique 80").
The term "thetan" is used for the first time but merely means a thetan exterior.
The Genetic Entity is designated by this name, a clear distinction is made between the incidents of the GE and those of the thetan.
Emphasis that with Dianetics you can "only" bring about Homo Novis or MEST-Clear, but do not clear the thetan because it addresses only the composite case.
November 1952 ("Scientology 8-80")
Running of concepts, "electronic" running of flows etc., no running of individual incidents; Black and White.
There is no standard procedure but just a bunch of different methods to run concepts.
Goal: To get the thetan out of the body and de-aberrate him until full recall of everything and full ability as a thetan = Cleared Theta Clear.
Originally (1950) the average tone level of men was estimated at 3.0, later this estimation is lowered. According to "Scientology 8-80" most beings are below 0.0.
December 1952 ("Scientology 8-8008")
Theta is regarded as the source of MEST, Dianetics as an overcome early stage in the development of Scientology.
"PT Differentiation" (between two similar objects) appears, being the first objective process.
SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) are used as the first method to assess a case and put it onto a prescribed program, i.e. a sequence of steps.
Focus on rehabilitating the abilities of a thetan - cause over mental MEST, breaking of agreements with the MEST universe placing of mock-ups and energies etc.
Types of processes: Creative processing and Postulate processing
May 1953 (PAB 2)
The goal is set as OT (SOP 8).
June 1953 ("This is Scientology, the Science of Certainty") "Thetan" and "Analytical mind" are declared as being synonymous.
Created things are mentioned that, if more complex, can assume a life of their own and be living beings.
August 1953 (Association Newsletter 8) The word "squirrel" is used for the first time in the sense of a person that uses techniques derived from Scn but deviating from it.
November 1953 (PAB 13) With the "Aberrative personality" for the first time a description of an SP as a case type is given (it is also called "Merchant of fear" in this bulletin).
February 1954 (PAB 20) The first precursor of the CCHs is described, as a remedy for a "case that cannot persist for more than half a second", to get it under the control of an auditor.
April 1954 (PAB 23)
A first method is introduced for remedying havingness as a difficulty in auditing (in the form of creative processing).
1954 With "Viewpoint Straightwire" the first "grade-like" process (except recall processes which were known before) is issued.
June/July 1954 Op Pro by Dup is introduced and from the 7th ACC ("Phoenix Lectures") on is used as a standard process.
July 1954
HCA/HPA is the basic professional course which teaches the current techniques (especially Op Pro 8C, Op Pro by Dup, various sorts of creative processing). Above that there are the grades of B.Scn and D.Scn which are to go more deeply into the same things.
Mid-Autumn 1954 (e.g. PAB 36) More attention on gradients of training and simplicity of the entrance to auditor training.
20 Oct 1954 (8ACC-14) The terms DED and DEDEX are given up in favour of "Overt", "unmotivated act" and "justification".
End 1954-1955
Creative processing by and by falls into the background but still is a part of the standard procedures.
From the first half of 1955 on Strong emphasis on objective processes; see also "Fundamentals of Thought", Chapter 12 ("Exact Processes"), where it says that today one addresses the subjective self as little as possible.
3 Oct 1955 (4LACC-1)
The term "rudiments" is introduced.
Oct/Nov 1955 (4LACC, PABs) Emphasis of the First and Second Postulate, thus "Not-Know-Processes"
1955 After the "SOPs" as a precursor of the grade chart in 1954 were followed by the "6 Basic Processes", these now are replaced by the "S.L.P.s" which are regularly changed and improved. They include already several processes in the way of modern grade processes, but in their higher levels still creative processing, too.
2 Nov 1955 (4LACC lecture "Randomity and Automa- ticities", also Ability 36) The phenomenon of the misunderstood word is mentioned, that is to wit (in a limited scope) as "misunderstood nomenclature"
10 Jan 1956 (Op Bull 12) A process should be run until cognition.
20 Jan 1956 (PAB 70) The precursors of the TRs are used in the form of "Dummy Auditing" for the training of new auditors.
Since early 1956 (Bull. 25 Jan 1956, PAB 88) The effect of a PTP on auditing progress is understood better and better. From ca. mid-1956 on the running of PTPs is part of the beginning steps of every standard procedure, later it becomes a part of "CCH 0".
28 Feb 1956 (PAB 73) It is stressed that it is not enough to just audit pcs, they should be trained, too. ("Basic Course").
4 Oct 1956 (HCOB) The precursor of the upper TRs is introduced as "High School Indoctrination".
January 1957 (16th ACC) The term "CCHs" is introduced. Part of these are today's CCHs 3, 8, 9, 10, Op Pro by Dup and SCS.
Spring 1957
Havingness still is being stressed, for example with regards to the ability of the pc to make something more solid (objective or subjective) .
First half of 1957 The lower and the upper TRs are issued in their final form and are used as the first steps in training auditors.
June 1957 CCHs 1-10 are brought into today's form.
December 1957 With "Clear Procedure, Issue 1" and the HCOBs preceding it (e.g. 3 Dec 57) Operierender Thetan is designated as the goal, this being a relative concept and a state that exists in gradients. Although theta clear comes above that it is not regarded as a valuable goal for auditing.
4 Dec 1957 (HCOB)
The importance of the Remedy of Havingness is qualified by pointing out that the loss of ARC and the repair of ARC is senior to it.
January 1958 (PAB 127)
LRH changes his assumption that (too much) communication can destroy havingness and states that only one-way communication will have such an effect while 2WC will improve the tone level of the pc.
Early 1957-Mid-1958 The common program for pc (with only little variations over the given period) consists mostly out of objective processes but at the end still contains creative processing. The basic version of this program can be found in "Clear Procedure, Issue 1". It is now stressed and put forth that Clear (MEST-Clear) can now be achieved and is being achieved by many pcs.
22 May 1958 (HCOB) First mention of the earlier similar phenomenon with regards to a rudiment (PTP).
Mid-1958 Most objective CCHs are falling into the background. The emphasis in clearing is now on help, valences and creative processing. CCHs 0-4, SCS and Connectedness are now regarded as "Supplementary processes".
July 1958 (20th ACC, Bulletin 25 July 1958) Five needle actions on the meter are described: Drop, Theta-Bop, Stuck, Rising, Free Needle. Additionally the Rock Slam is mentioned as the meter phenomenon occuring when the auditor comes close to the "rock".
July 1958 (20th ACC, HCOB 29 July 1958) until ca. end 1958
The "rock" as a kind of basic on the time track becomes an important issue in the standard procedure for clearing.
August 1958 (HCOB 5 Aug and 10 Aug 1958) For the first time, ARC breaks explicitly become part of the session rudiments, and for the first time ARC breaks from life (instead of just session ARC breaks) are pointed out.
10 Jan 1959 (HCOB) The DofP gets the duty assigned to instruct the auditor which processes to run on a pc.
20 Jan 1959 (HCOB) "Recall something you have done to (selected person)" is the first repetitive process aiming at overts.
January/February 1959 (Staff Auditor’s Conference 16 Feb 59) The Why of aberration, individuation etc. is discovered to reside in withhold resp. overt-withhold. In the standard procedure overts and withholds are stressed heavily in the form of repetitive processes.
Mid-1959 to end of 1959
Communication processes ("From where could you communicate to ...") and O/W processes are developped further and are now the main part of the processes used. (One single process that is specifically stressed is S2: "From where could you communicate to a victim?") The theory of communication processes is to bring the pc back to cause.
Different forms of "assessment", i.e. the finding of terminals for use in these processes. More and more frequently it is mentioned that a terminal selected on the E-meter should get a "drop" (fall). A process is regarded as flat on a terminal when the pc reads at the clear read for his sex (2 or 3) during several answers.
Dec 1959/Jan 1960 (e.g. HCOB 28 Jan 60)
LRH sees a vital breakthrough in the discovery that additionally to O/W the factor of responsibility has to be handled; O/W from this lifetime should be cleaned on every pc on a broad scale, including running responsibility on each overt disclosed.
3 Feb 1960 (HCOB) The first version of security check (exclusively for security purposes - to avoid letting persons with other intentions or uncleared O/Ws on Scientology or LRH on staff). The procedure is laid out in HCOB 26 May 1960.
25 Feb 1960 (HCOB) The first form of the model session is written down. LRH remarks that he did not establish it earlier because "I considered there was wide room for change".
April-July 1960 Help comes to the fore as a vital factor. CCHs are now only recommended for very low cases.
From September 1960 on Virtually only combinations of havingness, confront, help and O/W processes are used. The standard combinations of these are called "regimens".
